FAQs

Dermal filler and anti-wrinkle injections can be used to treat a multitude of issues. Botox/Botulinum Toxin is well known for reducing the appearance of wrinkles on the face but can also be used to reduce teeth grinding and excessive sweating. Filler is great for restoring lost volume to the areas of the face such as the cheeks and also improving the shape of certain areas eg the lips.

We always carry out a thorough consultation to ensure you are suitable for treatment and also that the treatment you want is the one that is best suited for you.

Anti-wrinkle treatment is suitable for men and women, aged 18+ that have wrinkles that appear or worsen on movement. The most common areas for treatment is the forehead, in between your eyebrows and crows feet.

You are not suitable for anti wrinkle treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have any neuromuscular conditions.

Filler is suitable for anyone over 18 that is complaining of thinning or sunken cheeks, thin or uneven shaped lips, lines around the mouth and deep nose to mouth lines. Both men and women are suitable for treatment with dermal filler.

You are not suitable for dermal filler if you have an autoimmune disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are prone to allergic reactions or have a known hypersensitivity to local anaesthetic agents eg lidocaine.

Fillers should not be used in combination with facial peels, laser or ultrasound-based treatments or if you have any inflammation, infection or cutaneous disorders at or near to the treatment site. If you have had previous dermal filler (no matter how long ago), please let us know in the consultation so we can thoroughly assess if there is any remaining before beginning treatment.

We always provide consultation prior to any aesthetic treatment. This is important for several reasons

  1. it allows us to assess you face to face and discuss your concerns to ensure you are having the best treatment for you. Sometimes the treatment you think you want isn’t the treatment you need!
  2. It allows you to get us and become comfortable with us as practitioners, as well as giving you time to ask any questions you may have.
  3. It allows us to fully run through your medical history including allergies, medications and any alcohol, tobacco or drug use. This is to ensure that the treatment will work for you and most importantly that its safe
  4. It allows us to assess any previous work you have had completed and whether this will affect any further treatment going forward.
  5. It is a legal requirement. Botulinum toxin is a prescribed medication in the UK therefore requires a medical professional to prescribe and examine patients prior to their treatment.

Remember – our consultations are free! Any  refundable deposits you pay to secure the appointment can either be redeemed against your treatment or will be refunded if you don’t want to go ahead.

We pride ourselves on giving a very natural result with any aesthetic treatment we provide. We believe these treatments are best used to accentuate your natural features and this is discussed in detail in the consultation appointment.

ANTI WRINKLE INJECTIONS

For anti-wrinkle injections we use ‘botox’. This is the leading brand name of botulinum toxin A and has been proven by clinical trials over many years. It is FDA and MHRA approved.

For anti-wrinkle injections we use ‘Bocouture’. This is because this is the product that is clinically proven to have the highest specific neurotoxin activity meaning that the product is more potent. It also contains less protein that other wrinkle relaxing injection products which reduces the possibility of ‘loss of effect’ through antibody production.

(Reference Frevert J (2012), ‘Content of Botulinum Neurotoxin in Botox/Vistabel, Dysport/Azzalure and Xeomin/Bocouture’. Drugs RD (2) 67-73.

The needles used are extremely small and so pain is minimal. You should only feel a little pinch!

Effects last 3-4 months on average but the more sessions you have, the longer the results will last.

We will review you 2 weeks after your treatment appointment as this is when full effect is achieved. If there is any asymmetry present, we will carry out a complementary adjustment dose to ensure you have the best results possible.

You will need to wait for at least 2 months after any anti wrinkle injections for further treatment to ensure the initial treatment has had time to settle.

Botulinum toxin works by blocking the signals from the brain to certain muscles. This prevents the signal from the brain, from reaching the muscles and therefore prevents movement of the muscles. As the muscle stops contracting for a period of time, the areas treated will result in reduced wrinkles and lines but the untreated areas will function as normal.

You will start to feel a difference in the muscles in 3-4 days after the procedure. Maximum effect of the treatment and therefore full results are visible at 14 days.

There is no recovery time and you can return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. You may have some bruising after the procedure, so we recommend having the treatment done at least 3 weeks before a big event.

It is important that you leave the treated area alone for the rest of the day after treatment, and to avoid touching rubbing or applying any physical pressure to the area.

We advise you avoid any exercise for 24 hours after treatment.

To help the effects of the botox we advise carrying out simple facial exercises a few times a day – frowning, smiling and raising your eyebrows.

There may be some discomfort to the injection site including some swelling and you may also have a slight headache. This usually resolves in a few hours. There may be some bruising present but this usually settles in a few days.

DERMAL FILLER

For filler, we use the Juvederm brand of products. These are made of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in your body meaning there is little to no risk of an allergic reaction. Hyaluronic acid also works to add moisture to the skin, so whilst plumping may be your main interest, the product will also help improve the function and form of your skin.
It has the consistency of a smooth gel which allows us to blend the product beautifully to give an authentic and natural result. Juvederm is the only dermal filler that is FDA-approved to last up to one year meaning you will get long lasting results.
The product can also be reversed if required with the injection of an enzyme known as hyaluronidase.

We do everything we can to make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment. We apply a topical anaesthetic prior to any procedure which numbs the surface layer of skin.
For lip filler, dental blocks are used to anaesthetise the upper and lower lips. This means any injections into the lips are completely painless!

Length of effect depends on the area treated. Lips filler lasts on average 6-8 months but cheek filler can last 12-18 months.

You will need to wait for at least 2 months after any filler treatment to ensure the initial filler has had time to settle.

As we age the body reduces its production of elastin and collagen and it also breaks down the existing collagen in tissues. Elastin and collagen keeps the tissues firm and the skin elastic – so losing these results in signs of ageing such as sagging skin, folds and wrinkles.

Dermal filler works by:

  • Filling the space where the volume has been lost
  • Attracting moisture to the area
  • Encouraging the body to increase collagen and elastin production to improve skin integrity and quality.

This means dermal filler can smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, create fuller lips and contour areas of the face.

Length of effect depends on the area treated. Lips filler lasts on average 6-8 months but cheek filler can last 12-18 months.

Results are visible immediately! There will be some swelling from a few hours after the procedure and so a definitive and settled result will be visible at 2 weeks.

Whilst you can resume most activities straight after treatment, we generally recommend avoiding intense physical activity for 48 hours to prevent swelling or bruising.
Some swelling and bruising is normal after the procedure and so we recommend having the treatment done at least 3 weeks before a big event.

Length of effect depends on the area treated. Lips filler lasts on average 6-8 months but cheek filler can last 12-18 months.

We advise no excessive exercise, saunas, facial massage or alcohol for 48 hours after the procedure. After 48 hours, daily massage of the area is advised to reduce any lumps? present.
An ice pack can be applied to the area to reduce any swelling and arnica cream can be used to reduce any bruising.

Bruising, swelling and the presence of some lumps are normal after the procedure. These usually settle within 14 days.
